A Pegasus rocket, launched from an L-1011 jetliner flying at 40,000 feet some 100 miles west of Monterey, California, placed a military satellite containing several experiments into orbit on 7 June. The military hopes that the experiment will be able to detect low-flying and slow-moving aircraft from orbit. A scanner on the satellite will measure potentially harmful radiation around the planet.--Stephen V Cole
