Sweden has decided to modify 14 of the final batch of JAS39 Gryphon fighters into two-seat command and control aircraft. These will have a special set of instruments (yet to be defined) in the rear cockpit, allowing a senior officer to serve as a strike force commander. These special aircraft will be designated JAS39D(C2). The Gryphon has an advanced network-centric capability, permitting rapid and secure data exchanges between ground command posts, recon aircraft, and other strike aircraft. This would allow a strike commander to check data from several sources and revise his attack plan in mid-battle, then transmit it to the attack aircraft.
