April 24, 2006: The U.S. Army has formed the first of four Intelligence Interrogation and Debriefing (IID) battalions. Each of these battalions will have 147 personnel, most of them specialists in screening and interrogating captured personnel, or people being screened for possible illegal behavior. Actual strength of the battalions when operating overseas, may be 200-300, because of attached specialists and support personnel from other intelligence agencies. Two of the battalions will be active duty, and two will be reserve units. Using reservists is important, as many of the best interrogators available are police detectives. Police, as a group, are more likely to be military reservists, and many of these will be recruited for the new IID battalions.
